What’s Wrong with your Air Conditioning?
We’ve seen a lot in our years of business as one of Tampa Bay’s most trusted AC repair services. When you service air conditioning systems in Florida for as long as we have, you know the issues based on how the homeowner describes them long before you even see the unit. Here are some of the most common problems with air conditioners that we see in the Sunshine State:
- Low Refrigerant
- Electrical Issues
- Safety Switch
- Dirty Filters and Coils
Refrigerant, or freon, cools the air within your AC. Freon does not evaporate so if your air conditioning system is low, chances are there’s a leak. Without this important chemical, your system will never cool down. A certified technician can diagnose, fix the leak, and recharge your unit with refrigerant.
Sometimes it’s as simple as a circuit being tripped, other times it’s something more serious. If your AC is not running at all, check the circuit breaker. If it’s tripped, flip it back on. If it trips again it could be a more serious problem with faulty wiring. Leave it off and call a professional AC technician.
Most air conditioning units have a safety related to the condensate drain pipe. Some have pans, some pipes. The condensate drain pipe prevents an overflow of moisture from ruining your AC. The pipe directs the moisture away from the unit.
Sometimes these pipes get clogged and water backs up. Most air conditioning systems have a safety shut off feature, that turns off your system when this happens. This is a common problem with air conditioners in Florida because of the high humidity and torrential rains during some of the year.
If excess moisture is the cause of your troubles, emptying the pan or draining the pipe, will cause your system to come back up immediately. If it doesn’t, call a professional to take a look.
The most common issue we see when we go in for preventive maintenance are dirty air filters. While it’s easy to forget, this simple monthly change (or whatever is suggested by the filter manufacturer) is akin to brushing your AC’s teeth.
Careful maintenance will keep the system up and running and help you avoid long-term problems like the premature failing of your compressor or fans. Take the time to remove the old filter and replace it with a new one. It will help you extend the life of your unit and keep your family healthier, particularly in this climate where the AC is running for most of the year.
Compressor coils get dirty as well, and if they are clogged, your system will not be running efficiently. Severe clogs can damage the system. Cleaning compressor coils is part of routine maintenance that AC repair and service technicians perform. Just another reason to have your system serviced as part of a preventative regimen.
